CHAPTER 23 The Death and Burial of Sarah

1 [⁵was ¹And ²the ³life ⁴of Sarah ⁸years ⁶a hundred ⁷twenty-seven]. 2 And Sarah died in the city of Arba, which is in the hollow -- this is Hebron in the land of Canaan. [³came ¹And ²Abraham] to lament Sarah, and to mourn. 3 And Abraham rose up from his dead. And Abraham said to the sons of Heth, saying, 4 [²a sojourner ³and ⁴an immigrant ¹I am] among you. Give then to me a possession of a burying-place among you! and I will entomb my dead away from me. 5 And answered the sons of Heth to Abraham, saying, No, O lord. 6 But hear us; [⁵as a king ⁶by ⁷God ¹you ²are ³with ⁴us]. [³in ⁵choice ⁶sepulchres ⁴our ¹You entomb ²your dead]! for not one of us in any way will withhold his sepulchre from you to entomb your dead there. 7 And rising up, Abraham did obeisance to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth. 8 And [²spoke ³to ⁴them ¹Abraham], saying, If you have it in your soul so as to entomb my dead away from my presence, hear me, and speak about me to Ephron, the son of Zohar! 9 And let him give to me the [²cave ¹double] which is his -- the one being in a part of his field. [⁴of silver ³for its worth ¹Let him give ²it to me], [⁴among ⁵you ¹for ²a possession ³of a memorial]. 10 And Ephron was sitting down in the midst of the sons of Heth. And responding Ephron the Hittite [²to ³Abraham ¹spoke] in the hearing of the sons of Heth, and [²the ones ³entering ⁴into ⁵the ⁶city ¹of all], saying, 11 By me let it be, O lord, and hear me! The field and the cave in it I give to you. Before all of my fellow-countrymen I have given it to you. You entomb your dead. 12 And Abraham did obeisance before the people of the land. 13 And he said to Ephron in the ears before the people of the land, Since [²with me ¹you are] hear me! The silver for the field, you take from me! and I will entomb my dead there. 14 [³answered ¹And ²Ephron] Abraham, saying, 15 Not so O lord, for I heard four hundred double-drachmas of silver; but what ever may this be between me and you? But you [²your dead ¹entomb]! 16 And Abraham hearkened to Ephron. And Abraham restored to Ephron the silver, which he spoke into the ears of the sons of Heth -- four hundred double-drachmas [²silver ¹of unadulterated] of merchants. 17 And [⁴is ¹the ²field ⁵of Ephron ³which] was in Double Cave, which is against the face of Mamre. The field and the cave which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, which is in its borders round about, 18 came to Abraham for a possession before the sons of Heth, and all the ones entering into the city. 19 And after these things Abraham entombed Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Double Cave, which is before Mamre; this is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 20 And [³was validated ¹the ²field], and the cave which was in it to Abraham for a possession of a burying-place from the sons of Heth.
